Li, Xiaoming is a professor in the  School of Computer Science. He obtained his Bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering from Harbin Institute of Technology in 1982, Master’s degree and Ph.D from Stevens Institute of Technology in 1984 and 1986, respectively. His current research interest lies in web data analysis and MOOC related education development.

Research experiences: 1988-1990, Post-doctor in Harbin Institute of Technology, mainly involved with artificial intelligence related project. 1991-1997, Professor of Harbin Institute of Technology, involved with parallel processing related work. In particular, spent 1995-1997 with NPAC at Syracuse University, working on a DARPA project about HPF and its runtime support. 1998-2017, Professor of Peking University, main research activities include web technology, search engine and web mining. And from 2010, shift interest towards the interface between computer science and social science, especially in education.

For a long time, he strongly believes that the Internet will play a historical role in changing education methodology and ecology. As a result, he has become one of the earliest advocates and practitioners for applying web technology in education in China. He conducted the first online course (Web Technology) between Syracuse University (USA) and Harbin Institute of Technology in 1996, when he was a visiting scientist of NPAC at Syracuse University. With colleagues at UWE, He initiated and conducted a web-based online course between Peking University and the University of the West of England (UK) from 1999 to 2004. In 2003, he led the development of then the largest open distributed lecture video delivery system, Realcourse, which consists of over 40 servers distributed in over 30 Chinese universities, hosting over 5000 hours of lecture videos. In recent years, with his leadership as the chair of task-force for MOOCs in Peking University, over 90 MOOCs have been launched since 2013.

He is a recipient of 2013 CCF Wang Xuan Award for his contribution in Tianwang search engine, and a recipient of 2014 CCF Distinguished Educator Award for his contribution in MOOC development in China.
